Who will love you?
Who will fight?
And who will fall far behind?
When I was younger, I loved all of the Disney movies, though Mulan was my favorite. Cause… badass woman doing what men think she can’t do simply because she wasn’t born with a penis? Yes, please.
However, as I grew older, I grew to have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Cinderella.
First of all, it paints step-families in a horrible light. And depending on your age, if you are dealing with a re-marriage situation of one of your parents, Cinderella may very well BE your only reference point for step-families. How in the hell are you supposed to explain to a small child that no, she will not be locked away and treated like garbage in favor of her step-siblings because what happens in movies isn’t always true in real life.
Also, no, woodland creatures will not help you complete your chores.
But then there’s this whole construct of love that this movie creates… and the Disney princess movies in general. Those of us who identify as hopeless romantics, perhaps still hold on to this fabrication created by movies like this that love can just… happen. That no matter how terrible the circumstances might seem, things can just randomly align, because Universe, and it will always be ok. The prince always shows up. Everything always ends happy. Your shoe will be your connection to you true love that you thought you may have lost.
That’s not how life works.
Love is possible, of course. I see it everywhere. But it’s work. Sure, you can’t force a connection with someone – that would be silly – but not everything is going to be sunshine, rainbows, and singing forest animals. No fairy godmother is going to show up and magically make life easier. When things get complicated, that’s when the work happens. And unfortunately, we’re not being taught this idea early enough to truly appreciate it as we grow up.
Or maybe I’m just a cynic. Entirely possible.
It IS, after all, Valentine’s Day. Though I do have a date later. *Grins*
